First graders at LaPerche were reading the book Going to School and learning about all the different ways kids go to school around the world. In Canada, some kids go to school on snowmobiles. In some parts of Australia, students walk to school barefoot! Partners discussed why students use different types of transportation to get to school and determined the weather played a big part. The students used the table of contents to search and find the information they needed. First graders are hard workers!

Add some snow to the school day and you can’t tell the difference between our oldest and youngest students at LaPerche. We had a ball in the snow today and made some great memories together. Kids built towers, castles, igloos, the Hoover dam, snow creatures including a bunny and more. It was cold but it felt amazing to play in the snow with friends. More pictures can be found on our Facebook page.

Kindergarten friends at LaPerche learned about the parts of the trees in science and then used fine motor skills to rip and twist tissue paper to make their own tree. The class brainstormed adjectives that would describe the tree. Each student received a strip of words they cut out and formed into a sentence. They were able to choose their own adjectives to describe their tree. Snowy, brown, big, and green were some of the words the kindergarten friends chose.

Kindergarten families, don’t let your kids trick you into thinking they need help will their snow gear. At LaPerche, they are working hard to be independent with each piece. Many students just need help with the coat being zippered or the second glove. So proud of our kindergarten friends and their growth in all areas!

The LaPerche December student council hosted a special spirit day on Friday. It was called Heart to Heart from 6 feet apart. Mr. Feinstein challenged schools across Rhode Island to do good deeds so the December student council challenged LaPerche students to do chores around the house to earn a dollar to bring in and donate so we could purchase small items for residents of a nursing home. The residents are lonely since they are not able to have visits from family and friends right now. The kids at LaPerche also decorated many cards that we will include with the small gifts. The students and families of LaPerche donated $375 towards this amazing cause. Thank you to all for your generosity!!

Thankful Kindergarten Friends! Kindergarten Friends went on a virtual scavenger hunt around their house. They had to find items that they were thankful for, items that kept them warm, items that they love, and more. Below is a picture of kindergarten friends finding someone that they are thankful for in their homes. So much love from our kindergarten friends! Kindergarten friends shared 3 things that they are thankful for. Friends expressed thanks for family, friends, pets, sports, and so much more. Mrs. Friel is thankful for 22 special students. Check out some thing amazing about each one in the picture below. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Thankful for our friends!
Who are we thankful for?
Mr. Feinstein started a new program this year called the Golden Ticket Raffle. Each Junior Scholar at in Rhode Island including LaPerche (every student) was given a Golden Ticket. Tickets are individually numbered and each was assigned to an individual student. Each week, Mr. Feinstein pulls five winning tickets. If your ticket number is called and you claim it in a week, the school wins $5000 and the student wins $500 to donate to a charity of their choice or back to the school. Today LaPerche had our first Golden Ticket Winner!!! A second grader in Miss Day’s class was the winner and she came running to the office with the winning ticket!! After celebrating with us and calling her mom, she decided to donate the $500 back to LaPerche!! What an amazing gift. Thank you Mr. Feinstein for your endless generosity and congratulations to our second grader!!!

At LaPerche, third grade and kindergarten in person and virtual students joined together and read “In November” and then discussed what usually happens in November in nature and in our homes. We then talked about how this year may look a little different, but we can still show thankfulness and love to those we can’t be with. We then did a directed turkey card for seniors at Smithfield Woods who may not get to be with their families for Thanksgiving. LaPerche students sending love to others!

Tyler is working on his single leg balance which is needed for many activities within his everyday routines such as going up and down the stairs and kicking a ball.  He has been working on many areas of balance such as walking in narrow spaces, on uneven surfaces and standing on 1 foot for many years, asTyler used to have to use a walker to move around his school and classroom.  It is amazing to see the progress in this skill but more impressive that his confidence is growing and knowing what his body can do and wanting to “show it off” to his peers and friends at school!! We are so proud of you!!

Every fifth grader serves on the student council at LaPerche and one of their favorite things to do is run Morning Meeting. Morning Meetings look different this year (over the intercom instead of in person) but the goal is the same, develop a school wide community. The council members share updates, celebrate birthdays, make announcements and end with the Pledge of Allegiance. School wide morning meetings are a great way to start each day!

LaPerche students were asked to do extra chores around the house to earn $1 to donate. The donations will be used to provide LaPerche families with gift cards to Stop and Shop for a Thanksgiving feast! The November student council collected $306 dollars and a $50 gift card to Stop and Shop from the LaPerche students (and families)!! Thank you for being so thoughtful and generous. Members of the SHS National Honor Society taught a lesson to the fifth graders at LaPerche about responsibilities in the class and community. They discussed the civic responsibilities of the citizens of the United States. The kids broke into teams and prepared skits to share with the rest of the class to help them understand the various duties. The high schoolers will be back on Friday for the second lesson.

Costume Day is always a hit at LaPerche. The in person and virtual students were so excited to show off their costumes and many acted in character all day. The kids may be a little less focused on Costume Day but they will not forget the fun they had at school! And we will not forget the smiles! LaPerche is in our third year implementing Responsive Classroom, a “set of well designed practices intended to create safe, joyful, and energetic classrooms and school communities”. We want school to be fun and engaging for all students. One way to have fun is by implementing brain breaks. On Friday, the third grade played woosha warrior together. In the game, there are three moves. The teacher or leader counts 3, 2, 1 Whoosha and makes one of the poses. The kids do the same. If your pose matches the leader, you are out and sit down. The game moves quickly, provides movement and challenges the student to predict which pose the teacher will make. It also provides an opportunity for students to be honest about being out and show good sportsmanship. Ask your child to teach the game to the family and post a picture below!

Fundations was in full swing in Ms. Clough’s class this morning. Fundations is a multisensory and systematic phonics, spelling, and handwriting program that we use with our kindergarten, first and second grade students. The second graders were determining how many “sounds/taps” there are in certain words. The students learn about diagraphs (two consonants that make one sound such as ch) and glued sounds (sounds that when they are together they do not say their normal sounds, but rather create a slightly different sound such as ing). Students had opportunities to discuss words with partners and then share their findings with the class.
