Who will participate in Virtual Instructional Day?

All PK-12+ students.

What is a Virtual Instructional Day?

Students will not report to school due to COVD-19 but will engage in learning activities using digital and/or paper resources. Students will engage with all classes scheduled on that day including specials.  Teachers are available from 8:30-2:30 with the exception of the lunch break.

How will Smithfield track attendance?

Students and families will be asked to complete a Google Form each day indicating if the student will be present (participating in the day's lessons) or absent.  If the student is absent, you must indicate the reason for the absence.  

How will students be informed about assignments during a Virtual Instructional Day?

Students in grades PK-2 have been provided with paper packets for week 1 and will then move to a virtual environment in week 2. Google Classroom/Google Suite will be the platform used in grades 3-12 to post student assignments, facilitate discussions, and submit work. Students regularly access Google Classroom on typical school days. All teachers will post assignments on Google Classroom and will be available for online communication during normal school hours. Secondary teachers will be available to students during their scheduled class times.  Specific information regarding each school's schedule will be communicated through the school principal.

How will students obtain assistance from teachers on Virtual Instructional Days?

All teachers and support staff will be available via email during school hours. Students in grades PK-12 can also utilize the Google suite to communicate with teachers.

How much time is the student expected to work during the Virtual Instructional Day?

No minimum or maximum amount of time is expected. Students should complete their work carefully, using the amount of time that is appropriate for them.

When will class assignments be due?

Some assignments will be turned in via Google Suite.  Families and students should keep all other work in a folder.  This work will be due upon return to school.

What if a student does not have access to the internet?

According to a recent survey, 98% of Smithfield families have home internet access. Teachers are aware that not all students have internet access at home and will provide accommodations when necessary for students without home internet access.  Recently, area cable and cellular providers have announced free plans for wireless access.  Get more info on this at one of these links:



Do students with identified special learning needs have an alternative means to access their education on Virtual Instructional Days?

Yes, individual supports, services, and accommodations for English Learners and students with an Individual Education Program (IEP), Individual Learning Plan (ILP), or a Section 504 Plan are reviewed, discussed, and agreed upon at the student’s annual meeting, a Section 504 meeting, or general education plan meeting. Special educators will make the necessary accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs. Accommodations may include changes in the following: presentation of a lesson, instructional strategies, student response format and procedures, time/scheduling, and/or assignment structure. Modifications are the changes made to provide a student with opportunities to participate meaningfully and productively. Modifications may include changes in instructional level, content/curriculum, and/or performance criteria. Students and families will also have access to their support provider via email during school hours.

What if I have questions about assignments?

Please contact your child’s teacher via their smithfield-ps.org email. Teachers will be available during school hours.

Will lessons be live or prerecorded? I have to work and may not be able to get my elementary child onto the computer at the designated time. 

Smithfield will be working to record all lessons as soon as this feature is enabled in New England.  We are hoping this will be available starting the week of March 30th but will continue to update families. This will allow students to follow our schedule live or do it at a time and pace that works for you and your family.

While I am working, a babysitter will be with my kids. Will they be able to access all of the material? 

Yes, each grade level will have a schedule and in each block of time, there will be links that your babysitter or another family member can access. Your children will also be able to just click on the link as well.

I do not have a computer my child can use. Can I borrow one from the school? 

Students in grades 3-12 took home Chromebooks on Friday, March 13th.  If you have a child in prekindergarten through second grade, we need to know if you have a computer or device they can use or if you need to borrow one. Please fill out this device survey ASAP so we can get you what you need. Principals will be sending home information about pickup times that will take place the week of March 23rd.
