As parents and educators, we all have the common goal of ensuring that our children and students read, watch, listen to and engage with age appropriate content. One tool at our fingertips is Common Sense Media.  Have you heard of if? According to the website--Common Sense Media improves the lives of kids and families by providing independent reviews, age ratings, & other information about all types of media.  It is well worth your time. Whenever my kids want to read, watch or play anything, I check it out on common sense media and read the reviews with them. The site provides an age rating and explains why.  It helps you make informed decisions about the content you allow your children to be exposed to.
There is also a section on the site called Common Sense Education. You can get to it by clicking on the “For Educators” button on the top of the page.  If your kids are on social media, take some time to check out the Digital Glossary. It “decodes all of shorthand on social media” and was eye opening for me.  It is so important to stay on top of what your kids are doing on social media and it you don’t understand what your kids are posting or reading, you don’t know if it is appropriate for your children.

Raymond C. LaPerche Elementary School is one of four elementary schools in the Smithfield Public School system. Our school is dedicated to Raymond C. LaPerche, a former teacher, principal and superintendent in the Smithfield Public Schools for 41 years. LaPerche first opened its doors in 1968 and presently serves students in kindergarten to grade five.
