SMITHFIELD SCHOOL VOLUNTEER BACKGROUND CHECKS-August 2014

Below is information about the volunteer background checks performed by the Smithfield Police Department.  All school volunteers need a new BCI check for the 2014-2015 school year.

SMITHFIELD RESIDENTS:

To have a background check done at the Smithfield Police Station, volunteers MUST be Smithfield residents.  Volunteers must complete the Smithfield Police Authorization for Release of Information form in its entirety and return the completed form, along with a clear and legible photo copy of a driver’s license or photo I.D., to the Smithfield Police Department, located at 215 Pleasant View Avenue.  The police department will not make photo copies of your driver’s license or photo I.D.  Completed forms are to be put into a designated mail slot in the front lobby (to the right of the entrance), at the Smithfield Police Department.  Detectives will process the background checks within 2 to 3 business days and will notify the volunteer and school department by e-mail.

Authorization for Release of Information forms are available at each school, each school’s website (on the right hand side of this website), and the Smithfield Police Department website (www.smithfieldpd.com).

Non-Smithfield residents

Non-Smithfield residents must inquire at the police station in the town they reside in, or go to the RI Attorney General’s Office in Providence.  The police department in the town you reside in will have their own authorization for Release of Information form.  If you are not a Smithfield resident you must contact the police station in the town you reside in for their process.

Non-Smithfield residents will be required to bring in the original BCI results to the Superintendent’s office.

Summer Learning Information--May 2014-- For attachments look above under "Parent Info" then "Summer Reading List"

Dear LaPerche Families and Students,

The hazy, lazy days of summer are almost upon us.  Thoughts of visits to the seashore, trips to the ice cream shop and cookouts with family and friends fill our minds.  As educators, we take great pride in the progress our students have made throughout the year.  We are depending upon our families to assist us in maintaining important skills through the summer months.

Research tells us that children who don’t read and write outside of school, especially during long breaks such as summer vacation, face a big loss in their academic growth compared to those who do continue learning all year long.  This means the summer months and other breaks from school offer wonderful opportunities for families, caregivers, and out-of-school educators to help improve reading, writing, and math.

How can you as a family member, caregiver, or educator help your child continue learning all summer?  There are some simple things you can do to help your child retain important reading, writing, and mathematics skills throughout the summer.  While not required, it is my expectation that every child will complete the TenMarks math program and one or more of the following summer learning suggestions:

  • All students are expected to complete this math program --Ten Marks online math program-There is a form letter below that details the specifics of the TenMarks summer program. Pleas enter the access code below so your child’s teacher can view your child’s summer progress.

LaPerche Summer Access Code: S14RLS4776

  • Summer Bridge Activities Book-These books can be purchased at Barnes and Noble or online at http://www.summerbridgeactivities.org/.  You want to order the book that has the grade your child is leaving and the one she is entering.  For my daughter leaving third grade and entering fourth grade I ordered the 3/4 book.

  • Summer Learning Week by Week Guide –Week by Week Guide is attached. These activities are designed to provide students with review in several areas and incorporate the safe use of technology.

In August, please complete the Signature Page for Parents (all included below) indicating which summer learning activities your child completed. Students should bring that page to school and turn into their teacher by September 5, 2014. Each child who completes his/her summer learning will receive a ticket to a movie with Mrs. Dorsey to be held September 19. Please feel free to email (jdorsey [at] smithfield-ps [dot] org) or call (231-6652) with any questions. I hope you and your family have a safe, relaxing and fun-filled summer break.

Sincerely,

Julie Dorsey

Principal

Thank You, Science NECAP and more...May 12, 2014

Thank you to all LaPerche families and the LaPerche PTA for the many ways you recognized the LaPerche Staff during Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week.  The sentiment shared was heartfelt, creative, and greatly appreciated.  Adults all over the school were beaming!  Especially touched were the support staff that you recognized for the significant impact they make every day at school.  Thank you again from all the staff for a wonderful week!

NECAP Science for our 4th graders begins tomorrow and runs through Thursday.  Please send your child to school well rested and well fed and on time!!  We encourage the kids to put forth their best effort and show all they know.  They have been well prepared! Students are allowed to chew gum during testing to aid with attention.  Please send in sugarless gum only.  If you child has braces or a retainer he/she is welcome to bring mints.

Do you know a child who is starting kindergarten in the fall?  Smithfield Public Schools is planning for full day kindergarten!!  If you know of a family who still needs to register, please encourage them to call the administration building at 231-6606 to set up a time to register!

Are you moving this summer?  While we would hate to lose you at LaPerche, I do encourage you to stop in and speak with Mrs. Bazinet to sign a release so we can expedite the records transfer for you. This will ensure your child a spot in his new school and allow us to appropriately set class lists for next year.

As the weather warms up, I want to take a minute to remind families that flip flops and open toed sandals are not allowed at LaPerche.  Please send your child to school in a closed toe shoe. The students are outside every day and closed toed shoes are required for safety.  Thank you for your help keeping your children safe.
